Production Issue: How to diagnose issue when SQL is thread starved

$

We have had several recent production issues with our SQL 2008 database where so many queries stacked up that we ran out of threads and sql was unresponsive.  We are having a tough time diagnosing the issue since Idera could not connect.  We couldn't tell via any of the views what led up to the issue.  Any ideas here?  We are on version 9.1.  Are newer editions better?  Also, we tried at one point turning on the query analyis feature but this at one point took down the sql server. Has anyone had luck with that in the newer versions?

In the process of trialling SQL Diagnostic Manager. Is there a way of changing the date format as at the moment it's mm/dd/hh:mm - would prefer it to be dd/mm/hh:mm?

Thanks

SQL DM causing excess load on Production OLTP server

Currently when I take SQLDM out of Maintenance mode the CPU utilization o the OLTP database it is monitoring goes up to between 75 and 95% and stays there for over 12 hours.

We are running SQL Server 2012 enterprise and SQLDM version 10.0.0.2127

Is there a standard configuration we should be looking at for Alerts and Monitoring

Thanks in Advance!

Restart IIS when a different server has high CPU

Hi

I support the database of a web application that will cause the CPU on my database server to spike.  The quick resolution is to restart IIS on the web server.

Does anyone know how I could get Diagnostic Manager to trigger an IIS restart on the web server when the database server goes critical with high CPU?

Thanks!

Log Backup Alert

Can you please help me how to setup an alert about no log backup for a database in full recovery ?

A transaction in session 566 has been active for 491 minute(s) and running since 1/3/2018 4:47:33 PM

We see similar alerts often. upon checking for open transactions using dbcc opentran on the database, we don't see any open transactions. But the above alert hangs on for several minutes/hours. The session in question is actually in "sleeping" status doing very little IO/CPU. After a while this alert disappears. Just curious if any of other users got this similar "False" alert.

Can I change Multi-Metric Alert email subject?

I'm consolidating some alerts that create multiple emails, the best way I found so far is use "All metrics in this list" for a single metric. This seems to have worked except I was planning on creating multiple alerts. They all have the subject "Multi-Metric Alert". Is there any way to change that per-alert? The intention is to have multiple Multi-Metric Alerts each with a different subject.

High Network Usage - Metric Reports

Network bandwidth is very high on a SQL 2012 production server (both in and out from SQL Server to Application Server). Which are the reports in SQL Diagnostics Manager help to determine the top queries with size of the data being handled?

Using DM to find unused databases?

Anyone have tricks in Diagnostic Manager to determine databases that haven't been used? There are a lot of T-SQL scripts floating around, all of which seem to not be very accurate in my experience.

Hi

I have a couple templates in use and wanted to audit which servers were using which template.  I'm sure this is right in front of my nose--but how can I tell what template a server is using?

RegEx to exclude login probe activity

Looking for a way to configure the SQL Server Error Log alert to exclude failed logins for specific login attempts that are probed daily, similar to the following.  We know they'll be coming from a specific IP address, but I am not sure whether it even cares about the second line as it will be triggering on the first line.  If we can't find a way to do this we'll probably just set this alert to informational and monitor it some other way as it is rather annoying to have to snooze numerous probe logins each day.

Warning 4/13/2018 10:31:37 AM Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5.
OK 4/13/2018 10:31:37 AM Logon Login failed for user 'probe'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: x.x.x.x]

DatabaseFileStatistics table not getting purged

Hello,

The DatabaseFileStatistics in our SQLdmRepository db is getting huge... over 67M rows... that go back to 2016 when we installed the tool.

The DatabaseStatistics table is over 20M.

Is there some purge mechanism that should be running? We are running the Grooming.p_GroomRepositoryData and Grooming.p_GroomRepositoryOrphanData stored procs daily.

Can I just delete some data?

Does Diagnostic manager search the network to find monitored SQL servers?

I have installed sql server 2016 sp1  on a server in my domain.  I installed Idera SQL safe backup agent so I could later add it to SQL Safe. Does SQL backup agent automatically reach out to my diagnostic Manager computer?  For some reason my new SQL server 2016 instance shows up   in the list inside diag manager.

How is CPU calculated for large numbers of CPU cores?

We recently upgraded our hardware and SQL server to be able to use 104 cores hyperthreaded.  In traces I see both @@CPU_BUSY and sys.dm_os_ring_buffers.  Which one is used for the dashboard?  We recently saw an issue where using sys.dm_os_ring_buffers gave us over 100% CPU and when we asked Microsoft about it they said that we should use sys.dm_os_sys_info instead e.g.:

select process_user_time_ms from sys.dm_os_sys_info

--92625

waitfor delay '00:00:05'

select process_user_time_ms from sys.dm_os_sys_info

--91000

select (92625 - 91000) / (104*5000.00)

Console Navigation Slowness

Hi Everyone

Before I hit Idera Support with an annoying ticket of "but it's slow" I thought I'd run this past everyone.

My long running install of v10.0 was annoyingly slow when my team would navigate around the tree on the left.  Notably as we'd have to scroll to the bottom of our 350 servers everything would just pause while the tree refreshed.  Like pause long enough to be a legit annoyance.

This week I finally upgraded to 10.2.3 and this issue is persisting.

Do other people encounter this?  If so--did anyone figure out how to fix it?  Are there any real world recommendation for workstation specifications for monitoring this many servers?

Thanks

Can we change the 12 hr default that the alerts appear to stay active

If I have a Agent job that completion status if 'failed' we get an alert, however if this happens over a weekend we don't see this unless we go looking as the alert clears after 12 hrs. Can this behaviour be changed?

Server won't reconnect post-DM migration

I just migrated DM from a 2012 server to 2016 - my monitored servers/SQL instances are a mix of 2012-2016, and they all reconnected with DM successfully except this one. I'm sure the cause is something obvious, but I'm not seeing it. Suggestions?
